The growth environment and local conditions of Polygonatum odoratum

Polygonatum odoratum growth environment and conditions

1. Polygonatum odoratum is suitable for growing in moist, deep and loose soil places. It can be planted under forests on gentle slopes and low mountains and hills. It is often distributed under forests or on shady slopes of mountains at an altitude of 500-3000 meters.

2. Polygonatum odoratum is widely distributed in the temperate zones of Eurasia. In China, it is distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, and Taiwan.

Polygonatum odoratum growth conditions

Polygonatum odoratum has strong adaptability to environmental conditions and is not very demanding on soil conditions, but it is not suitable for growing in waterlogged, saline-alkali, clay, and sandy land. It is best to provide loose, fertile, well-drained soil, which can speed up its growth.

Polygonatum odoratum growth temperature

Polygonatum odoratum prefers a warm environment. Generally, the rhizomes emerge when the temperature is 10-15℃, it blooms at 20-22℃, and the underground roots grow and thicken at 22-25℃.

The growth process of Polygonatum odoratum

1. Before sowing Polygonatum, the land should be prepared. The ground should be raked into small furrows 5 cm deep and 3 cm wide. The planting spacing should be 2-3 cm. After sowing, cover the topsoil with 3-4 cm and tamp it down.

2. Polygonatum odoratum seeds mature in late August to early September. It is best to sow them in autumn after collecting them. The seeds do not need to be stored. The sowing time is from late October to early November, and the sowing amount is generally 10-15 kg per mu.

3. If sowing in late March to early April, about 8 kg of dry seeds are needed per acre. Soak them in water for 24 hours before sowing. Polygonatum odoratum will not sprout in the year of planting, but will only grow small roots underground, and will not sprout until April of the second year.

Time and method of planting Polygonatum odoratum

1. Polygonatum odoratum can be planted in spring, summer and autumn, but the best planting period is from autumn to before the first freeze.

2. The planting methods of Polygonatum odoratum are divided into strip planting and hole planting. The furrow or hole is 8-10 cm deep and covered with soil about 4 cm thick. The spacing between plants in strip planting is 15 cm and the spacing between rows is 30 cm. For hole planting, the spacing between holes and rows is 30 (-40) cm × 30 (-40) cm. The holes should be staggered, with 3-4 plants placed in each hole. Strip planting is used in farmland, and strip planting or hole planting is used in mountains, sparse woodlands, and orchards.
