When is the best season to plant wintersweet?

Wintersweet planting season and time

Wintersweet is planted in spring and autumn, with a high survival rate. Wintersweet is planted in spring, usually sown from February to March, and harvested in April.

Common varieties include Suxin, Yunnan, Qikou, Xia Lamei, Hudi, Renmei, Gongfen, Xiaohua, Gouya, and Liuye. Although the varieties are different, the planting time is the same.

Wintersweet harvest season

Wintersweet blooms from November to March of the following year. Generally speaking, 3000-4000 kg of plastic film covers 5000 kg! Depending on the variety and cultivation conditions, soil conditions are different, 3000-8000 kg/mu is within the normal yield range.

Steps and methods of planting wintersweet

1. Seed selection and processing

First select mature and plump seeds, wash them with water, remove the seeds floating on the water surface, treat the remaining seeds with an appropriate amount of mycin, and let them stand in a cool and ventilated environment for 1 to 2 days.

2. Germination treatment

The epidermis of wintersweet seeds is relatively hard, and the germination rate is very low if planted directly. It is best to soak them in warm water at 30℃ for about 24 hours, then put them in wet sand, knead the seeds and wet sand into a ball, place them in a warm and humid environment, spray them with water once a day, and they will germinate and take root in about a month.

3. Planting

Prepare deep acidic sandy soil with good drainage. Add appropriate amount of rotten bean cake and compost as base fertilizer before sowing. Place the selected seedlings in the sandy soil, keeping a distance of about 30 cm. Water immediately, compact lightly with your hands, and cover them with a thin layer of soil.

4. Water and fertilizer management

During the maintenance process, it is best to keep the potted plants half dry and half wet when watering. Drain appropriately in the rainy season, increase watering times in the dry season, and keep the potting soil dry. Do not water if it is not dry in spring and summer. The principle of watering is to add cake fertilizer solution every half a month, add phosphorus and potassium fertilizer solution in summer, and loosen the soil in time.

The soil should be changed every 2 to 3 years, and it is best to do it after the flowers fade each year. In hot weather, the plant should be cooled to prevent poor growth. Appropriate pruning should be done during the growing season to avoid nutrient loss and keep the plant growth balanced.
