How to propagate Perilla and what to pay attention to

Perilla propagation method

Perilla can be propagated by seeds or cuttings. The main way of natural reproduction is seed propagation, and sowing propagation is the fastest.

Perilla breeding time

Generally speaking, perilla is propagated in spring. The sowing time varies in different planting areas, from mid-March in the south to April in the north.

Perilla propagation method

Perilla cutting propagation

1. Preparation for cuttings: The time for perilla cuttings is in spring, summer and autumn. You can cut branches for cuttings when the plant has side branches, which are fully grown and have a certain thickness without serious lignification. For general family planting, prepare containers and potting soil. For large-scale cuttings, prepare to turn the soil and apply fertilizer to make a seedbed. The cuttings should be strong, free of pests and diseases, with 4 nodes and short internodes.

2. Cutting method: Cut the selected branches, take out the lower leaves, place them in a ventilated place to dry the wounds, soak the lower end of the cuttings in a rooting powder solution to promote rooting, and then you can cut them in the soil. The cutting depth is about 5 cm, and compact the soil.

3. Cutting maintenance: After cutting, perilla needs to provide a warm environment with a temperature between 20 and 25 degrees, spray water appropriately, and keep the soil humidity at around 65%. The wound will heal after about a week, and it can be exposed to light at this time. Before that, a shade net can be used to shade it in the open field, and the potted plants should be placed in a cool, ventilated corridor with scattered light.

Perilla seed propagation

The dormancy period of perilla seeds is as long as 4 months. To break the dormancy period of newly harvested seeds, you can place the seeds in an environment of 3 degrees for 5 days and soak them in gibberellins to promote germination. Renovate the soil in advance and apply organic fertilizer. It is best to plant them in a place with good ventilation and light transmission, loose and fertile soil, and good water and fertilizer retention properties.

Notes on Perilla Breeding

Before grafting perilla, the soil needs to be turned over and dried, and sprayed with pesticides for disinfection. After grafting, it needs to be watered in time to ensure close contact with the soil without causing hair on the lower end. Note that after a lot of roots have grown, you can apply appropriate amounts of light fertilizer and water to provide a warm growing environment.
