Chrysanthemum cultivation methods and management

Chrysanthemum cultivation methods and management

Chrysanthemums , popular for their fall blooms and variety, are an easy-to-care-for short-day plant. If you want to grow chrysanthemums well and achieve a plump plant shape, luxuriant side buds and blooming flowers, you just need to master the cultivation methods and management of chrysanthemums.

1. Reasonable pruning

Chrysanthemums grow quickly, especially in spring and summer. During the growth period, the newly grown branches should be pruned in time to promote the germination of side buds. When the side buds grow to a certain height, top them again to maintain the plump shape of the plant. Continuous pruning and topping will allow the plant to produce multiple flower buds from each new shoot during the flowering season, achieving a pot-filling effect.

2. Adequate lighting

Chrysanthemums need full sun, both during the growing and flowering seasons. Make sure your chrysanthemums are placed in a location that receives the best light year-round. Adequate light helps prevent branches from growing too tall, promotes plant growth, and promotes flower bud differentiation during the flowering season, thereby growing more flower buds. Even in summer, there is no need to shade chrysanthemums.

3. Proper fertilization

Since chrysanthemums grow rapidly, you should choose multi-element fertilizers when fertilizing, and avoid single nitrogen fertilizers, so as to prevent the plant branches from growing too fast and affecting the plant shape and strength. During the growing season, apply a multi-element fertilizer 2 to 3 times a month to promote root development and nutrient absorption. After entering autumn, switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and apply it 2 to 3 times a month to promote the formation of flower buds and the blooming of flowers.

In addition to the above three points, watering is also very important. Keep the potting soil moderately moist, and water thoroughly when the soil is half dry. Ensure good ventilation and choose fertile and breathable soil for cultivation.
