The role of sunflower base fertilizer

Sunflowers have a high demand for fertilizer during their growth period. Three quarters of all nutrients will be consumed from the formation of the flower disk to the flowering period. More phosphorus fertilizer is needed from seedling emergence to the formation of the flower disk. More potassium fertilizer is consumed from the formation of the flower disk to the maturity of the seeds. Therefore, in order to increase the yield of sunflowers and make their seed kernels plump and full, attention should be paid to applying base fertilizer.

Sunflower fertilizer selection

The base fertilizer for sunflower is mainly farmyard manure, with 1500-2000 kg of farmyard manure applied per mu, combined with 10 kg of diammonium phosphate and 15-25 kg of potassium chloride.

How to apply base fertilizer to sunflower

When renovating the soil for sunflowers in autumn, apply 2500-3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu. Deeply bury the seed fertilizer before sowing. Apply 10 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu, or 15 kg of triple compound fertilizer.

Usually before planting sunflower seedlings, you can mix the fertilizer evenly into the soil. You can also dig a few holes 2-3 cm deep around the plants after planting the seedlings and bury the fertilizer in them.

How much base fertilizer should be used for sunflowers

For each mu of sunflower, 1000-2000 kg of organic fertilizer, 5-8 kg of nitrogen fertilizer, and 4-5 kg ​​of phosphorus pentoxide are applied. The potassium fertilizer should be determined according to the potassium content of the soil. If it reaches the normal standard, no potassium application is required. If it does not reach the normal standard, 3-4 kg of potassium sulfate can be applied per mu.

How to apply fertilizer to sunflower

When the sunflower is undergoing the first inter-row cultivation and weeding, top dressing can be carried out with a tillage depth of 8 to 10 cm and the plant must be about 15 cm away from the seedlings. For the late top dressing, it can be combined with the last inter-row cultivation and fertilizer can be applied between the rows. The tillage depth is generally still around 8 to 10 cm.
