How to propagate camellia and what to pay attention to

Camellia propagation method

There are three methods of propagating camellia. Cutting method is more commonly used and is usually carried out in September. Leaf cutting method requires selecting thin branches, ringing them at a certain distance from the top, and wrapping them with wet soil. Sowing requires picking and sowing immediately. After sowing, cover with a layer of film and wait for seedlings to emerge.

The fruits of camellia ripen in autumn, and the seeds can be picked and sown at this time, or they can be stored in sand and sown in spring.

Camellia can be planted by cuttings, so that its growth rate will be faster, and it requires suitable temperature for planting.

Camellia breeding time

The appropriate time for camellia cuttings is from May to June or from September to October each year. At this time, the survival rate of cuttings is relatively high. When maintaining it, it also requires a suitable temperature environment and sufficient sunlight.

Camellia cutting propagation

Camellia cuttings are usually done in September, but can also be done in spring. First, select a healthy plant that is free of diseases and insect pests, cut its semi-lignified branches, remove the leaves at the base, and keep the top three. After disinfection, insert them into a sand pot or vermiculite. They will generally take root in 60 days.

Camellia sowing propagation

Since the seed coat of camellia seeds is relatively hard, it needs to be cut with a knife or soaked in warm water for a period of time before sowing. Prepare loose and fertile soil, sprinkle the seeds on the surface, spray water appropriately, and cover with a layer of plastic film. Wait until the seedlings emerge and then remove them.

Camellia leaf cutting propagation

When propagating camellia by leaf cuttings, you need to use branches with better growth as the scion, and cut the bottom at an angle. You also need to use oil tea as the rootstock. Plant the rootstock in a flowerpot, cut its top into an inclined surface, and fit the cuts of the scion and the rootstock together and wrap them.

Camellia breeding precautions

When propagating camellia, you need to pay attention to the need for a suitable temperature environment during normal maintenance. It is best to place it in a place with good light environment for maintenance, and there should be a good ventilation environment at ordinary times. Watering and fertilizing should be done in moderation.
