legend

There is an interesting story about the origin of marigold.

About 500 years ago, a Spanish officer went to Mexico and happened to discover wild marigold flowers in the suburbs. He thought they were very lovely, so he brought the seeds back to Europe. At that time, many people saw that its flowers were all golden, so they used it to worship the statue of the Virgin Mary.

Later, it was first introduced to southern my country in the middle of the 16th century. At that time, people did not know its name. Since its flowers and leaves had a stinky smell, they had to call it "stinking chrysanthemum". After that, it is said that on the 60th birthday of a county magistrate, his housekeeper placed two rows of potted flowers at the gate to add to the atmosphere. The county magistrate was overjoyed when he saw them and asked, "What flowers are these?" The housekeeper replied, "Stinkchrysanthemum." Unexpectedly, the county magistrate misheard and said, "Oh, it's marigold. Great, great!" The housekeeper quickly complimented, "Yes, yes, I wish the master a long and healthy life." From then on, the name of marigold spread like wildfire.

The name of "marigold" was officially recorded in the Qing Dynasty book "Hua Jing". In recent years, many people regard marigolds as "flowers of respect for the elderly" and give them to the elderly on "Senior Citizens' Day" to express the younger generation's thoughts.
