How to propagate Lithops and what to pay attention to

Lithops reproduction method

Lithops can be propagated by sowing, division, and cuttings. Lithops seeds can be propagated, and the natural way for Lithops to reproduce is seed propagation. Generally speaking, Lithops is propagated fastest by cuttings, and it cannot be hydroponically cultivated.

Lithops breeding time

Lithops are suitable for reproduction in warm seasons, so they can be reproduced in spring and autumn, specifically from March to May in spring and from September to October in autumn.

Lithops propagation method

Lithops division propagation

Lithops will sprout new buds in spring every year, which will expand and burst the old leaves. The old leaves will slowly shrink and die. The new leaves will grow very fast and 2-3 young new plants will grow. At this time, they can be divided and transplanted.

Lithops cutting propagation

Before propagating Lithops by cuttings, prepare soil with good drainage in advance. You can choose nutrient soil or river sand, peat soil and other materials. Clean and disinfect them in advance. In the early spring or late autumn growing season, cut off leaves or stems with 3 to 4 leaf nodes, dry the wounds and insert them into the soil. Spray the soil with water, and roots and new shoots will soon grow.

Lithops sowing propagation

Lithops are generally propagated by sowing in spring from April to May. Sow the seeds on the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Do not water directly at this time. It is best to use the immersion method to water. The temperature should be controlled at 15-25 degrees. It will germinate about 15 days after sowing. After the seedlings emerge, the light exposure time can be increased.

Matters Needing Attention in Propagating Lithops

The root system of Lithops is not well developed. It is generally best to grow it in a small pot, not too deep. The best depth is 8-10 cm. The vigorous growth period of Lithops is from late autumn to the following spring. It needs careful maintenance at this time, and the high temperature in summer is not suitable for its growth. Therefore, it is in a dormant period, and measures such as cooling, ventilation and shading should be taken.
