How and when to prune dianthus

How and when to prune dianthus

1. Pruning time

Pruning dianthus is usually done during the growing season, after flowering and before winter. The time is different, the pruning method and purpose are also different. However, be sure to disinfect pruning tools to avoid infection.

2. Pruning method

1. Pinching: When the dianthus seedlings grow to a certain height, they should be pinched off, directly trimming the top. This can well control the height, save a lot of nutrients, and promote the growth of side branches. In addition, during the budding stage, the buds under the armpits of the branches should be removed in time, which can also save a lot of nutrients.

2. Prune the dead flowers: Its flowering period is usually between May and June. After the flowers fade, the dead flowers should be pruned off to save nutrients and help it recover. Withered flowers should be pruned as they fade, that is, the flowers that have bloomed and faded should be pruned.

3. Heavy pruning for the winter: Prune once every year before winter. The specific time is between August and September, when heavy pruning is required. Just control the length of the branches to eight to nine centimeters and cut off most of the growth points. This will promote branch growth and help the plants take shape better. In addition, heavy pruning can improve its cold resistance, which is beneficial for wintering and flowering and growth next year.
