Does melon prefer shade or sun?

Melons are easy to grow and are suitable for planting in the backyard of home or in places with a wide environment. At the same time, melons are a sun-loving plant. Only when they receive sufficient sunlight every day can they produce sweet melons. At the same time, the temperature at night should not be too high, which is conducive to the accumulation of sugar.

Do melons like sunshine?

Melon likes light and requires strong light and long days of more than 12 hours. Its light saturation point is 55-60klx, and the light compensation point is 4klx. If it is lower than this intensity, the stored photosynthetic products begin to supply the growth of the plant. If the light intensity is lower than this for a long time, the plant will wither and die due to lack of nutrition.

Melons can be exposed to the sun in the summer. They can withstand short-term exposure, but if sunburn occurs, they need to be shaded to reduce sunlight by 40%.

Can melon tolerate shade?

Melons are not shade-tolerant, so it is best not to plant them in shady places. Even if the melons can still grow, they will not be sweet, have no edible value, and are not ornamental.

Melon growing environment

Melons prefer neutral soil and have aerobic roots. They are suitable for cultivation in a pH range of 6.0-6.8, deep soil rich in organic matter, with good permeability or sandy loam. The suitable temperature for growth is 25-35℃, and the suitable temperature for germination is 30℃. Most varieties cannot germinate below 15℃.

Melons require less water during the seedling stage, more water from the vine extension stage to the early and middle stages of flowering and fruiting, and less water in the later stages of fruiting. Melons (especially thick-skinned melons) require dry air, and the relative humidity should be below 50-60%.
