How to grow the rubber tree more vigorously?

The Brazilian wood, scientifically known as Dracaena fragrans, is famous for its vigorous vitality and bright green leaves. It is a popular foliage plant. Many people have it at home, so how can we grow the rubber tree more vigorously?

1. Lighting

The rubber tree has strong adaptability and prefers light but is also shade-tolerant. The most suitable growth temperature is 20-30℃. In spring, autumn and winter, it should be placed in a well-lit place, receiving direct sunlight in the morning and evening, and in summer it needs to be shaded by 50% to avoid strong sunlight.

2. Watering

The rubber tree is drought-tolerant but not moisture-tolerant. Watering should be moderate to avoid excessive moisture in the potting soil which may cause root rot. Keep the soil moist and avoid waterlogging. Water once a day in spring, summer and autumn, in the morning in spring and autumn, and in the early morning or evening in summer.

3. Fertilization

During the peak growth period (May to October), first apply a small amount of organic fertilizer at the base or edge of the pot, and then apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer once every half a month for 1 to 2 times in a row to promote rapid growth of branches and leaves. Fertilization should be stopped in winter.

4. Pruning

Proper pruning in spring and autumn to remove dead branches and leaves will keep the plants beautiful and reduce nutrient waste. Pruning is not recommended in summer and winter, as pruning under high or low temperature conditions may cause damage to the plant.

5. Soil

The Brazilian tree does not have high requirements for soil, but loose, breathable, well-drained and humus-rich acidic soil is preferred. You can use a mixture of coconut coir and river sand and replace the potting soil every 2-3 years.

6. Notes

The rubber tree is susceptible to scale insects and red spiders. Once discovered, it should be sprayed with pesticides for prevention and control. The rubber tree is not cold-resistant. The temperature in winter should be kept above 8-10℃ and avoid being below 5℃ to prevent frost damage. After pruning, apply appropriate fertilizer to supplement nutrients and promote the growth of branches and leaves. After pruning, spray the wound with carbendazim solution for disinfection, apply wood ash, place it in a cool and ventilated place, and wait for the wound to heal.
