Environmental conditions and characteristics of pepper growth

Environmental conditions and requirements for the growth of Zanthoxylum bungeanum

Sichuan pepper is widely distributed in provinces such as Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Henan in my country. It is planted in plains, mountains, hills, etc. It likes a warm and humid growing environment and requires sufficient light during its growth period.

Pepper growth temperature

Sichuan pepper has high requirements for temperature, with the optimum growth temperature being 20-25℃. The plant is also very cold-resistant, and can withstand temperatures as low as -20℃, but it is afraid of late spring cold snaps, which will cause a reduction in pepper yields.

Pepper growth humidity

The growth of Sichuan pepper requires a certain humidity, but the plant is afraid of waterlogging, so water must not accumulate in the soil. When storing Sichuan pepper after harvesting, it is best to control the air humidity at around 60-90%.

Pepper growing soil

Sichuan pepper has strong adaptability to soil and can grow well in poor soil. The pH value of the soil can be between 6.5-8. The water content of the soil should not be too high, otherwise it will affect the flowering and fruiting of the plant.

Growth cycle and process of Zanthoxylum bungeanum

Sichuan pepper has a long lifespan. The juvenile stage from seed germination to flowering and fruiting lasts 2-3 years. It will begin to bloom and bear fruit in small quantities 3 years after planting. After 4-5 years, the fruit will continue to grow larger. After 10 years, it will enter a large-scale fruiting period with a significant increase in yield. The peak fruiting period lasts about 10-15 years.
