Environmental conditions and characteristics of chestnut tree growth

Environmental conditions and characteristics of chestnut tree growth

Chestnut tree growth environment conditions and requirements

It is native to China and distributed in Vietnam, Taiwan, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Jiangxi, Fujian, Yunnan, Tibet and other places in mainland China. It grows in areas with an altitude of 370-2800 meters and is mostly found in mountainous areas. Chestnut trees like mild and moist climate, are cold-resistant, drought-resistant, waterlogged, and light-loving, and are not demanding on soil.

Chestnut tree growth temperature

The average temperature suitable for chestnut tree growth is 8-15℃. Northern chestnut trees are relatively cold-resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 25℃, which is roughly consistent with the isotherm of the annual average temperature of 8-10℃.

Chestnut tree growth humidity

Chestnut trees are adapted to growing in an environment with a humidity of 30-40%. It is more appropriate to water them in spring and autumn. The principle of watering can be followed: water when the soil is dry and water when the soil is wet.

Chestnut tree growing soil

Chestnut trees are suitable for planting in acidic or slightly acidic soil. They grow well in soil with a pH of 5-6, but grow poorly when the pH is above 7.2.

Chestnut tree growth cycle and process

The best time to sow chestnuts is mid-to-late March, when the ground temperature is above 12°. The grafted chestnut trees will begin to bear fruit in 2 to 3 years. Chestnut trees have a long lifespan, with a common age of 200-300 years. Generally, seedlings will begin to bear fruit in 4-8 years, and enter the peak fruit-bearing period in 15-16 years. If propagated by grafting, they will begin to bear fruit in 2-3 years, and enter the peak fruit-bearing period in 4-8 years.
