How to grow sunflowers

Sunflower Growing Conditions

Sunflowers have a short growth cycle and are not afraid of high temperatures. They can be planted in all seasons, mainly in summer and winter. They prefer sunny environments and are not shade-tolerant. They are suitable for planting in loose, fertile, well-drained soil.

How to grow sunflowers

Sunflowers are suitable for planting in well-drained soil containing humus. They should be placed in a sunny place during the growing season and shaded in summer. The daytime temperature should be around 21-27 degrees, and the nighttime temperature should be 10-16 degrees. They cannot lack water for a long time and need to be watered once 1-2 days. Reproduction is mostly done by sowing in the spring.

Watering sunflowers

Sunflowers grown in the open field require less water, so watering can be controlled and supplemental watering can be done when the temperature is slightly higher in summer. For sunflowers grown in pots for viewing, the soil needs to be kept moist and supplied with sufficient water.

Sunflower Fertilization

Organic fertilizer can be applied when planting sunflowers. 3-5 days after the seeds germinate, you can sprinkle seed fertilizer on the surface of the soil. During the growth period, apply fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen fertilizer and supplemented by potassium fertilizer once every 20 days or so. Spray zinc, copper and manganese solutions after the budding period.

Sunflower Pest Control

When planting sunflowers, the soil needs to be deeply plowed and disinfected to reduce pathogens. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be added to increase the disease resistance of the plants. If sclerotinia disease occurs, use methyl thiophanate and procymidone wettable powder for treatment. If verticillium wilt occurs, use carboxin emulsifiable concentrate to irrigate the roots. If rust occurs, spray triadimefon wettable powder. If downy mildew occurs, spray metalaxyl mancozeb wettable powder.

How to grow sunflowers at home

Sunflowers have a wide adaptability to soil. It is best to use loose and fertile soil for potted maintenance. The suitable growth temperature is 10-44 degrees. When the temperature is too low, warming measures need to be taken. It needs sufficient sunlight for growth and cannot be placed in the shade for a long time. Water it in time to keep the soil moist, and water it more when it blooms.

Sunflower care precautions

Sunflowers need sufficient light to grow. The most ornamental feature of the plant is its large flowers. During the growing season, it is necessary to promptly trim excess side buds and pinch the tips of the shoots during the seedling stage to promote branching and flower growth.
