How to grow peony flowers well

Peony Growth Conditions

Peonies are relatively cold-resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C. They grow normally in areas with an annual average relative humidity of about 45%. They prefer shade and are not sun-tolerant, so they do not have many requirements for light, but they do require loose, fertile, well-drained neutral soil and sandy soil.

How to grow peony flowers

To grow peonies, use a mixture of leaf mold, garden soil and river sand. Choose breathable clay pots for cultivation, provide more than 6 hours of sufficient light, maintain an appropriate temperature of around 16~20℃, and adhere to the principle of dry and permeable watering.

Watering Peonies

Peonies do not require much water. Generally speaking, you can reduce watering in winter or not water them at all. During the growing season, water them after you find the soil turns white and dry. Do not water too much, and do not allow water accumulation to affect the growth of peonies.

Peony Fertilization

Peonies need to be fertilized in three main periods: spring for cultivating buds, flowering period, and autumn for later growth. Fertilization is needed once a month, and long-term fertilizers can be applied before winter for better wintering.

Peony disease and pest control

Common diseases of peony include leaf spot disease, the main pest of which is white grub. Leaf spot disease mostly occurs from June to August and should be prevented as soon as possible, generally starting from mid-May, spraying Bordeaux mixture every 7 to 10 days, and spraying 4 to 6 times in a row. White grubs are generally killed with ammonia water as base fertilizer or topdressing, which has a good effect.

How to grow peony at home

1. When growing peonies at home, you need to use flower soil with high nutrient content, soft soil and good drainage ability, maintain the surrounding temperature within 15-25℃, and place them in a place with good light.

2. Normally, do not water the peony too much, but keep the soil moist. Increase watering appropriately in summer and fertilize once a month, but add phosphorus fertilizer 1 to 2 times before flowering.

Matters Needing Attention in Peony Care

During the maintenance process of peonies, proper pruning is required. In spring, keep the buds, cut off the extra buds, remove the diseased branches and overgrown branches, and ensure the beautiful shape of the plant and ventilation and light transmission. In summer, after the flowers fall, remove the remaining flowers, and in late autumn remove the diseased branches, dead branches and overgrown branches.
