How to care for Vanda

Vanda Growth Conditions

Vanda orchid needs more light to grow, but the leaves will be damaged by direct exposure to strong light. It likes high temperature and fears cold. The suitable temperature for its growth is about 26℃, and the room temperature needs to be kept above 20℃ in winter. Vanda orchid has aerial roots, and it is suitable for growing in a well-drained medium.

How to grow Vanda

Vanda orchids are usually planted in pots with porous walls, using charcoal, broken bricks, etc. as substrates. The growth temperature is controlled above 20°C. In the northern greenhouse, the shade is 30% to 50%. The plants are sprayed with water 1 to 2 times a day to increase the air humidity. In addition, fertilizer is sprayed on the leaves once every 1 to 2 weeks during the growing season.

Watering Vanda

Vanda orchids should be watered more frequently in spring and summer, once in the morning and once in the evening. When the temperature is low in autumn, the amount of water should be reduced to avoid waterlogging. In winter, watering should be controlled and the plant should be kept dry to facilitate its wintering.

Fertilizing Vanda

Vanda orchids need to be fertilized frequently during their vigorous growth period. Compound fertilizer can be applied once a week, but nitrogen fertilizer should be reduced before flowering, and only scale potassium fertilizer should be applied. Fertilization should be stopped during flowering and in high temperatures or winter to avoid fertilizer damage.

Vanda orchid pest control

The common disease of Vanda is black spot, which can be controlled by spraying mancozeb every half month. The main pests are scale insects and whiteflies, which can be killed manually or by spraying with omethoate emulsifiable concentrate.

How to grow Vanda at home

1. When growing Vanda orchids at home, you should choose a container with good air permeability for planting. You can choose charcoal, coarse gravel sand, snake wood chips, broken bricks, etc. to prepare the substrate. During the growth period, you should maintain good sunlight, avoid exposure to the sun in summer, and use a shade net to provide appropriate shade.

2. Vanda orchids must maintain sufficient water during their growth period, and the air humidity should be maintained at around 60-80%. Apply diluted fertilizer every 7-10 days during the peak growth period, and stop fertilizing in winter.

Vanda orchid care precautions

Vanda orchid prefers high temperature environment and has poor cold resistance. It is usually suitable for growing at a temperature between 20-30 degrees. If the temperature is lower than 5 degrees in winter, it will affect its growth, so warming measures should be taken. It is best to ensure that the temperature is above 15 degrees, which is conducive to flowering next year.
