High-yield and high-quality cultivation techniques for Wogan

High-yield and high-quality cultivation techniques for Wogan

Wogan is a late-maturing hybrid citrus variety that is characterized by strong tree vigor, early fruiting and high yield, beautiful fruit appearance, and easy cultivation and management. Therefore, it is very popular among fruit farmers. So what should we pay attention to in the high-yield and high-quality cultivation technology of Wogan? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Site selection and park construction

Wogan prefers warm and humid climate, is drought-resistant and afraid of waterlogging, and is suitable for planting in areas with an annual average temperature of 18℃ to 22℃ and a minimum winter temperature of no less than -2℃. You can choose sandy loam or red-yellow soil plots that are sheltered from the wind, facing the sun, with a slope of less than 15°, deep soil, loose and fertile, and well-drained. The pH value should be between 6.0 and 6.5.

2. Seedling selection

It is best to choose seedlings with uniform plant shape and complete root system. If the planting area has alkaline soil, sour orange and red orange can be selected as grafted rootstocks ; if the soil is paddy field, broadleaf trifoliate orange can be selected as grafted rootstock.

3. Planting of seedlings

It is best to choose spring or autumn for transplanting, and the spacing between rows and plants is generally 3 meters × 4 meters or 2.5 meters × 3 meters. When planting seedlings, lay out the lines in a standardized manner, so that they are arranged in vertical and horizontal rows. Apply calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer or superphosphate and decomposed cake fertilizer to each trench. Then mix the fertilizer with the surrounding soil evenly, backfill it, and water the soil to moisten it.

4. Moisture management

In the rainy seasons of spring and summer, accumulated water should be removed promptly; in the drought seasons of autumn and winter, water should be irrigated and covered to retain moisture. For trees that will bear fruit next year, pay attention to water control after the autumn shoots mature to inhibit winter shoots and promote flower bud differentiation.

5. Reasonable fertilization

The Wowo orange grows vigorously and the fruits hang on the tree for a long time. It has a large demand for fertilizer and water. During production, base fertilizer should be applied heavily, and the base fertilizer should mainly be rotten and fermented farmyard manure and compound fertilizer . In addition, top dressing should be applied 3-4 times throughout the year, during the spring shoot growth period, the fruit stabilization period, the autumn shoot growth period and after fruit harvesting, with nitrogen fertilizer being the main fertilizer, and attention should be paid to the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

6. Plastic surgery

Use a natural open-heart shape or a modified main trunk shape to keep the tree ventilated and light-permeable. In addition, heavy pruning is carried out in late spring and light pruning in summer, and summer shoots are removed in time to promote the differentiation of flower buds.

7. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of Wogan are canker, scab and anthracnose; the main insect pests are psyllids, red spiders, leaf miners, aphids, etc. When preventing and controlling pests and diseases, we must adhere to the principles of prevention first and comprehensive prevention and control, regularly inspect orchards, and immediately deal with early symptoms of pests and diseases.

In general, in order to achieve high-yield and high-quality cultivation of Wogan, it is necessary to start from multiple aspects, including the initial site selection and seedling selection, as well as subsequent scientific management and meticulous operations. Of course, the specific cultivation techniques need to be flexibly adjusted according to the actual planting conditions.
