When to plant perilla? How to plant?

Perilla is an annual herb of the Lamiaceae family, loved by people for its unique aroma and diverse uses. It can not only be used as an ingredient to add flavor to food, but can also be used as medicine and has high economic value. Let’s learn together when to plant perilla? How to plant?

1. Planting time

The suitable time to sow perilla is usually from March to April in spring. During this period, the temperature begins to rise and there is sufficient rainfall, which is very suitable for the growth of perilla. The southern regions may sow in March, while the northern regions may sow a little later, in mid-to-late April.

2. Site selection and land preparation

Perilla has strong adaptability to soil, but prefers well-drained, loose and fertile sandy soil. You should choose a higher, well-drained, sunny plot for planting.

3. Fertilization

Before sowing, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied, mainly organic fertilizer , to ensure the nutrients required for plant growth.

4. Planting seeds

It can be planted directly or by transplanting seedlings. When direct seeding, spread the seeds evenly on the soil surface and then cover with a thin layer of soil. If the weather is dry, you can cover the ground with plastic film after sowing to keep the soil moist, and then uncover it after the seedlings emerge.

5. Planting

When the seedlings grow to a certain size, thinning and transplanting are carried out, maintaining an appropriate spacing between rows and plants, generally 25cm×30cm, to facilitate ventilation, light transmission and field management.

6. Notes

Avoid planting in heavy clay soil as this may affect the growth of perilla. Perilla likes warmth and is not cold-resistant. The suitable temperature for its growth is 18-23℃. It grows slowly at low temperatures and the temperature should be avoided below 1°C to prevent the plants from being damaged by frost. During the growth period of perilla, the soil needs to be kept moist and irrigated in time. Fertilization is mainly based on base fertilizer, and nitrogen fertilizer should be applied appropriately in the later stage according to the growth.

7. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of perilla are rust, and the insect pests include beetles, moths and borers. In the early stages of the disease, diseased plants should be removed and disinfected in a timely manner, and appropriate pesticides should be used for prevention and control.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and key points of perilla. When planting perilla, you can pay attention to some of the contents mentioned in the article.
