Vines

Climbing plants such as climbing roses and roses grow very fast in summer. Excessively dense branches not only look unsightly, but are also prone to diseases and pests, so they must be pruned. Those cultivated within two or three years do not need pruning.

Pruning tips

1. Pruning before flowering: In late winter or early spring, cut off 1/4 of the old branches and adjust the size and shape of the remaining branches. Keep 2 to 3 buds on the side branches. When the new buds grow to 3 to 4 cm, only keep 1 to 2 buds. Keep 4 to 6 flower buds in the whole pot of roses to concentrate the nutrients. Remove all other new buds.

2. Pruning during the flowering period: keep the main branches, cut off dead branches, weak branches, and diseased branches at any time, and shorten the long side branches (5-8 cm) according to the size of the growing space, so that the flower branches are evenly distributed and have enough growth space.

3. Pruning after flowering: Generally in June to July, remove the withered flowers at any time; in addition, cut off 1/3 to 1/2 of the strong branches, and 2/3 of the thin branches. The branches that are too thin should be cut off completely.

Woody

Woody plants generally have two types of branches. One is the long branches, which are used to cultivate the main trunk. If they grow too long and densely in the summer, they can be shortened. The other is the short branches for flowering, which are slightly pruned after flowering.

Gardenia

Gardenia grows vigorously in the summer, tends to grow too tall and bloom less, so it must be pruned.

Pruning tips

1. In the early stage of growth: light pruning after budding, mainly cutting off some of the flower branches at the top to promote the development of side branches and increase the number of flower buds in the later stage.

2. During the vigorous growth stage: prune the messy and overlapping flower branches, weak branches, parallel branches, cross branches, etc., and remove the overly dense terminal buds, generally leaving 2 to 3 buds on one branch.

3. Flowering stage: After the flower buds grow, leave 2 to 3 on each thick branch and 1 on the weak branches, and cut off the rest to ensure that nutrients are concentrated for flowering.

4. After the flowers fade: cut off the flower branches in time to promote the germination of new buds. When the new buds grow to two or three nodes, pinch them off; at the same time, cut off some axillary buds to promote the growth of the main branches.

Jasmine

If you do not pay attention to pruning jasmine when caring for it, and it grows too densely, it will also lead to weak branches and few flowers.

Pruning tips

1. In spring, dead branches, weak branches and thin branches that have overwintered should be cut off in time, and strong thick branches should be cut to about 15 cm to sprout new buds.

2. When the spring shoots grow to 4 to 5 nodes, pinch off the tips. For branches without flower buds at the top, remove two pairs of tender leaves to promote the formation of flower buds.

3. In summer, you can cut off all the overgrown branches, as leaving them there will waste nutrients. Cut off the branches that are too long to make the space layout reasonable.

4. Remove the remaining flowers after they fade, and cut off the broken and dead branches between 1 to 3 nodes below the flowers to retain nutrients. The tree can then bloom again in about half a month.

Summer dormancy

Many flowers tend to go dormant, grow slowly, and have difficulty flowering when the hot summer arrives, such as Christmas cactus. But if you do a good job of pruning during the maintenance period, you don't have to worry about problems surviving the summer.

Pruning tips

1. After the flowers fade, remove the remaining flowers in time and shorten the 3 to 4 stem nodes under the flowers. Choose a sunny day to do the pruning.

2. Christmas cactus that has been cultivated for 3 to 5 years needs to be pruned to remove overly dense branches and leaves and aging and diseased branches to ensure sufficient growth space and ventilation. It should not be pruned in summer, but should be placed in a scattered light place such as a north windowsill during maintenance. Try to water as little as possible and do not fertilize, and avoid being too stuffy and humid so that it can safely survive the summer.

Grass and flowers

Once the summer grass flowers bloom, they fill the entire pot very quickly, but they also fade quickly. A trick to prolong the flowering period and keep the pot blooming is to prune hard! Below, Huahua will take petunia as an example to introduce it.

Pruning tips

1. Generally, pinching should be done in the early stage of growth. When the new branches grow 5 or 6 leaves, remove the top 2 leaves. Pinching should also be done after the side branches grow new leaves.

2. After flowering, when the petunia outgrows the pot, the flowers will become smaller and smaller. At this time, you should prune them without hesitation, cut off all the flower branches, and leave enough nutrients for the new flower buds. After a week, the petunia will continue to outgrow the pot.

That’s all for today’s introduction.
