Garlic is an herbaceous plant of the genus Allium in the Liliaceae family. It has a unique flavor and can increase appetite and has the function of killing bacteria and preventing diseases. It is one of the seasoning plants planted in every household’s small vegetable garden and balcony pots. It is deeply loved by consumers and is cultivated in various places in the country. 1. Planting time of garlic in Northeast China

Garlic planting in the Northeast usually starts in mid-September. ‌This is because the temperature in the Northeast is relatively low, so in order to ensure that the garlic seedlings can grow 3-4 leaves before winter comes, they need to be planted in advance. This practice is conducive to the good growth of garlic sprouts even in colder climatic conditions, ensuring the survival rate and growth of garlic sprouts.

2. Garlic cultivation method

1. Choose the planting time and location

Garlic prefers cooler climates, so it’s best planted in the spring or fall. In northern regions, spring sowing and planting can generally be carried out from March to April, or autumn sowing and planting can be carried out from late September to early October.

2. Prepare fertilizer

Garlic prefers fertile, loose, well-drained soil. Before planting, the soil needs to be loosened and weeds and rocks removed. Then, apply an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer to the soil, such as decomposed chicken manure, cow manure, etc., to improve soil fertility. Generally, 3,000 kilograms of decomposed organic fertilizer and 200 kilograms of 51% potassium sulfate compound fertilizer are applied per mu.

3. Choosing garlic seeds

Choose garlic varieties with good adaptability, strong disease resistance, stable and high yield, such as Taikong No. 2, Daqingke, Hesuan No. 2 and other varieties. Planting these varieties will make it easier to obtain high yields.

4. Planting garlic

(1) Seed dressing with pesticides: Before sowing, seeds can be mixed with 30% suspended seed dressing agent of thiamethoxam/amycin at a ratio of 1:200. After drying, prepare for sowing.

(2) Sowing: Sow the garlic cloves at a plant spacing of 10 to 15 cm and a row spacing of 15 to 20 cm. Arrange the garlic cloves neatly in the soil with the tip facing up and the bottom facing down.

(3) Cover with soil: Lightly cover the garlic cloves with soil, leaving the tip of the clove about 1-2 cm above the soil. Then use a watering can or narrow-mouthed bottle to water gently to moisten the soil.

5. Field management

(1) Watering: The soil of garlic needs to be kept moist during its growth period, but do not allow water to accumulate in the soil. In dry weather, frequent watering is required.

(2) Weeding: Weed regularly to keep nutrients and moisture in the soil available to garlic.

(3) Fertilization: During the growth period of garlic, you can apply some organic fertilizers, such as decomposed compost or green manure, to promote the growth of garlic.

(4) Pest and disease control: Check the growth of garlic regularly. If pests and diseases are found, take timely measures to prevent and control them. Biological pesticides or organic pesticides can be used for prevention and control to avoid harm to the environment and human body.

6. Harvest

Generally speaking, the growing period of garlic is 3-4 months. When the garlic leaves begin to turn yellow and wilt, they are ready to harvest. Dig the garlic out of the soil, dry it for a few days, then remove the dead leaves and dirt and you can eat or preserve it.

To grow garlic with high yield, you need to choose the right time and place, prepare fertile soil, purchase high-quality garlic seeds, and plant and manage correctly. Mix the seeds before sowing, keep the soil moist after sowing, weed and fertilize, and prevent diseases and pests. The growing period is about 3-4 months, and it can be harvested when the leaves turn yellow and wither.
