How to grow water spinach to get high yield?

How to grow water spinach to get high yield?

Water spinach is a kind of vegetable that many friends love to eat. It is rich in nutritional value. In some places, it is also called water spinach. It is mainly composed of stems and leaves. The most suitable temperature range is 25-30℃, and it can withstand high temperatures as high as 38-40℃. So how can we grow water spinach to achieve high yield?

1. Sowing time

It is suitable to sow water spinach when the temperature is stable at above 15℃ in spring, usually in mid-April. Sowing too early may cause the seedlings to be damaged by low temperatures, affecting their healthy growth.

2. Fertilize the soil

To ensure vigorous growth of water spinach stems and leaves, the soil needs to be deep and rich in organic matter. Before planting, the soil should be deeply plowed and sufficient organic fertilizer and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer should be applied. Generally, more than 3 cubic meters of organic fertilizer, 30 kilograms of compound fertilizer and 10 kilograms of urea should be applied per mu.

3. Sowing method

The seed coat of water spinach seeds is thick and absorbs water slowly. It is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water and germinate them before sowing to speed up germination. The sowing method can be broadcasting or row sowing, and after sowing, cover with about 1 cm of fine soil.

4. Field management

Thinning and transplanting: To avoid crowding of seedlings, thinning should be done when the seedlings have 2 true leaves. The spacing between plants should be kept at about 10 cm square for broadcast sowing and 5 to 8 cm for row sowing. When the seedlings have 4 true leaves, they should be thinned out. For broadcast sowing, the seedlings should be thinned out in 10-15 cm squares. For row sowing, the seedlings should be thinned out in 15 cm spacing.

Inter-row cultivation and soil loosening : Loosen the soil after transplanting to promote root development and lay a good foundation for stem and leaf growth.

Watering: Water less before transplanting, and water thoroughly after transplanting. As the temperature rises and the plant growth accelerates, gradually increase the watering frequency to keep the soil moist.

Fertilization: Water spinach needs to be harvested continuously, so it needs more nutrients, mainly nitrogen fertilizer. Top dressing should be done after each harvest, with 5 to 10 kg of urea applied per mu. After that, compound fertilizers should be used alternately in amount at each harvest stage.

5. Harvest

Harvesting starts when the plant grows to 30 cm in height, mainly harvesting tender stems, and retaining 2 to 3 nodes at the base of the stem to promote the growth of new buds and side branches. After several harvests, you can harvest again, leaving only 1 to 2 nodes to promote the healthy growth of side branches.

In summary, to grow water spinach, one needs to understand its growth characteristics, master its planting techniques, and then plant it reasonably according to the climatic conditions and seasonal conditions of different regions.
