Daily care of spider plants

Watering: Chlorophytum has fleshy roots and a strong ability to retain water. It is afraid of waterlogging but not drought. It will not die even if it is not watered for 10 days or half a month. On the contrary, watering it every day may cause its roots to rot! Usually watering once every 5 or 6 days is enough. Chlorophytum likes a humid environment. Spraying water once in the morning and evening every day can prevent the tips of the leaves from drying out.

Light: Chlorophytum likes a semi-shaded environment, preferably with scattered light. You can place the Chlorophytum near the window in the living room. It is best to place spider plants together with other flowers and plants so that the air humidity is high and the leaves are not likely to dry out and turn yellow.

Fertilizer: Fertilizer is essential if you want spider plants to grow well. Water the soil with a thin layer of cake fertilizer once a month, or bury compound fertilizer granules in the soil. Be careful not to let the compound fertilizer granules touch the roots of the spider plant when using them.

Repotting of Chlorophytum

Time to repot: Chlorophytum comosum grows relatively fast, so it needs to be repotted about every 2 to 3 years. If you don't change the pot, the nutrients in the original pot will be consumed and the growth of the spider plant will be affected.

Steps to repotting:

1. Remove from the pot: After stopping watering for a period of time, carefully remove the spider plant from the pot.

2. Root pruning: cut off all old roots, dead roots and residual roots.

3. Apply base fertilizer: When repotting, you can bury some base fertilizer at the bottom of the new pot, such as slow-release fertilizer, chicken manure and other organic fertilizers.

4. After re-potting, place the spider plant in a cool and ventilated place, and wait for it to recover before taking normal care of it.

Division of Chlorophytum

Timing of division: When the spider plant is growing vigorously, it will branch out and grow small spider plants. We can use these small spider plants for division.

Steps of division:

1. Find the newly grown small spider plants and cut them off.

2. Choose a flower pot with large drainage holes, put newspapers and tiles at the bottom of the pot to cover the drainage holes, and put a layer of expanded clay at the bottom as a drainage layer.

3. Bury the small spider plant in loose and fertile soil. It does not need to be buried too deep, 1-2 cm is enough, and water it thoroughly. Place the planted spider plant in a cool and ventilated place, and you can carry out normal maintenance after about a week.

Treatment of Chlorophytum Root Rot

How to deal with minor root rot: Minor root rot of spider plant is usually manifested by withering and yellowing of leaves. If the spider plant shows slight root rot, it is most likely caused by overwatering. At this time, you should reduce the frequency of watering and take the flowers out to bask in the sun frequently.

How to deal with severe root rot: If the spider plant has severe root rot, you must first remove it from the pot, cut off the rotten roots with a sterilized sharp knife, then apply rooting agent to the remaining roots, replace them with new soil, and new roots will grow soon.
