How to trim carnations

1. Topping

The tops of most plants are advantageous, and the buds at the top will grow first, thus limiting the growth of the side buds. Therefore, in order to make the plants more lush and increase the number of flowers, we will choose to remove the tops. Carnations are also such plants. The first topping should be done when the plant grows 8 to 9 pairs of leaves, and this time only 4 to 6 pairs of leaves need to be left; the second topping should be done when the plant's side branches grow more than 4 pairs of leaves, and this time only 3 to 4 pairs of leaves need to be left on each side branch. Finally, the whole plant should have 12 to 15 side branches.

2. Pruning during bud formation

When the plant grows flower buds, we only need to keep the flower bud at the front end of each side branch, and the others can all be removed. This can ensure that the flowers are brightly colored and large in shape, improve the quality of flowering, and increase their ornamental value.

3. Pruning after flowering

After the plant's first blooms fade, remove the flower stalks immediately. This will help the plants continue to bloom and reduce nutrient loss.

If you are a novice in growing flowers, don't be too enthusiastic and don't have the heart to prune them. This plant has its own strong growth nature, so even if you make a mistake in pruning it, it will slowly grow back. However, if the plant is not pruned in time, it may become slender, and then it will have neither a dense shape nor normal flowering, resulting in the complete loss of its ornamental effect.
