How to propagate Desert Rose

How to propagate Desert Rose

1. Cutting

This method of reproduction is usually chosen in spring and summer. First, find some 1 to 2 year old branches, preferably the top branches, and then cut them into several sections, each about 10 cm. After cutting, you will find that juice will flow out. Please note that the juice is poisonous, so wash it off with clean water and then place it in a cool place to dry. After that, you can use clean river sand as the substrate and insert the branches into it. During the cutting period, you must pay attention to controlling the amount and frequency of watering. Just keep the substrate slightly moist and properly block the sunlight. Generally, roots will take shape after 3 to 4 weeks.

2. Layering

It can be propagated by layering, the survival rate is very high and the steps are simple. Usually, we can use this method to propagate during the growing season of the plant, with spring and summer being the best time. When layering, first use a knife to make a cut at the place where it takes root, then cover the wound with soil, then find a transparent film to wrap it, and tie the two ends tightly. After that, when the roots grow to the film, you can cut them off and plant them.

3. Grafting

When grafting, it must not be done in the rainy season, spring is best, so that we can see it bloom quickly. Usually the best length for the scion is between 7 and 10 cm. After grafting, you need to put it in a dark place. If the grafting is successful, wait for 10 days for the cut to recover, and then put it in a sunny place.

4. Sowing

It is actually not easy to bear fruit, and usually requires artificial pollination. When the fruit is ripe, it will naturally crack, so the seeds can easily be lost. So we must harvest it before it cracks. After collecting the seeds, we should plant them as soon as possible. If they need to be stored, they should be placed in a cool place as much as possible, otherwise the seeds will easily lose their ability to grow.
