Green onions are a common crop grown by farmers. As a common seasoning vegetable , they have a stable market demand and their planting prospects are still very broad. So when is the best time to sow onions? When is the germination time? Let’s learn more about it below. Onion sowing time The sowing time of green onions is generally divided into spring and autumn. Spring sowing is usually done from March to April, while autumn sowing is done from September to October. But the specific location depends on the geographical location and climatic conditions. Onion germination time The emergence time of green onions is usually about 7 to 10 days after sowing, and the specific time depends on the climatic conditions and soil temperature at the time of sowing. Under suitable temperature conditions, onion seeds will germinate 6 to 8 days after sowing. How to sow green onions so that they sprout quickly? 1. Select the site and apply fertilizer Choose loose, breathable soil with a deep soil layer, good drainage and rich in organic matter. It is best to choose a plot that has not been planted with onions, ginger or garlic in the past 2-3 years. As base fertilizer, spread 2000kg of decomposed organic fertilizer , 15-20kg of Tianji nitrate-phosphate compound fertilizer 15-15-15 or 30-40kg of calcium ammonium nitrate. The soil is plowed to a depth of 25-30 cm, then harrowed, leveled, and furrows are dug for planting. 2. Seed treatment Choose new onion varieties with high activity and high germination rate. Soak the onion seeds first, then place them in a warm and humid environment of about 17-22 degrees to keep warm and moist for 2-3 days to germinate. Wait until most of the seeds germinate and turn white before sowing them. This will promote faster germination and emergence of the onions after sowing. 3. Sowing method Generally, the row sowing method is adopted. Water can be applied after sowing or after watering, sowing can be done after the water has seeped down. After sowing, cover with 1.5-2.0 cm thick nutrient soil, sow 68 grams per square meter and 3-4 kilograms per mu. 4. Post-sowing management After sowing, green onions need to be kept warm and moist to promote germination. You can cover them with plastic film or chopped straw, and remove them when the seedlings are 2-3 cm tall. In the early stage of emergence, water less if the soil is not dry and the seedlings are not wilted; after the seedlings are all grown, pay attention to thinning them out in time; when the seedlings have 2-3 leaves, if the growth is weak, you can spray them with dilute urea water, but the amount should not be too much. When the green onion seedlings grow to a standard suitable for transplanting, they can be transplanted in time. After the seedlings have survived, they can be transferred to normal management. Usually, onion seedlings can be transplanted when they grow to be about the thickness of a chopstick. In general, the sowing time and germination time of green onions are not fixed. The key is to create a good growth environment for the sowing of green onions, which will help the healthy growth of the onion seedlings.
