How to plant Tillandsia seeds

How to plant Tillandsia seeds

1. Seed collection

In fact, it is very difficult to obtain seeds under normal conditions, and they are generally obtained through artificial technology. It basically takes 3 to 4 months from flowering to seed maturity. Usually its seeds are relatively small, so there can be many seeds in one fruit. Then we can take out these seeds and plant them through artificial pollination. When planting, we always adopt the method of picking and sowing immediately, because once the seeds are separated from the mother plant, they will quickly lose their vitality. So the seeds should be planted immediately after harvesting.

2. Preparation of sowing medium

Before planting seeds, it is very important to choose the right substrate. Generally speaking, the best sowing medium is a mixture of river sand, perlite and peat soil. After the medium is mixed, it is sterilized by high temperature to prevent the retention of diseases and insects, and then it can be planted.

3. Planting seeds

We plant the harvested seeds in a sterilized substrate, then press the substrate with our hands. There is no need to cover them with soil, just cover them with a piece of glass or film to keep them moist. After all these are done, in order to make it germinate faster, we need to control the temperature between 24 and 26 degrees. The seeds will start to germinate after about a week to half a month.

4. Maintenance after sowing

After the seeds germinate, subsequent maintenance is also essential. First, we need to remove the film or glass to allow it to ventilate better. Then, when it grows into a seedling and has 3 to 4 leaves, we can transplant it. Generally, it is transplanted in a 4 to 5 cm large pot to ensure that it has enough space to grow. Then give these seedlings another 3 to 4 years of cultivation, and their central leaves will begin to change color and bloom, and then we can enjoy watching them to our heart's content.
