When should green onions be planted?

When planting green onions , you must master the correct sowing time, which can not only ensure its healthy growth, but also effectively improve its yield and quality. So when is the best time to plant onions? Let’s learn more about it below.

When should green onions be planted?

Green onions are generally suitable for cultivation in spring and autumn. Among them, the spring cultivation time is usually from the end of March to the beginning of April, while the best cultivation time in autumn is from mid-September to early October. However, the specific sowing time should be determined according to local climatic conditions and variety characteristics.

How to plant green onions?

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose a plot that has not been planted with onions and garlic for 3 years, with loose soil, good fertility, and neutral or slightly alkaline. Apply 5000kg of high-quality farmyard manure, 50-75kg of superphosphate, and 40kg of urea per mu. Deep plowing and harrowing are carried out to make flat beds with a width of 13m and a length of 7-10m, ready for sowing.

2. Seed selection and processing

Choose suitable green onion varieties according to local climatic conditions, and ensure that the seeds are of good quality and have a high germination rate. Before sowing, soak the seeds for germination. First, wash the seeds with warm water to remove the dead seeds, soak them for 12-24 hours, place them at 15-20℃ for germination for 2-3 days, and sow them when most of the seeds turn white.

3. Sowing method

You can sow seeds directly in the field or start raising seedlings in beds or containers first. The sowing depth is about 0.5-1cm, and the seed spacing is about 2-3cm.

4. Transplanting and planting

Green onions can usually be transplanted when they have three to four leaves. Land preparation and trenching are required before planting. The trenching depth is generally half the height of the scallion, and the scallion trench width is 20-25cm. The row spacing should be reasonably reserved to meet the subsequent soil cultivation needs and facilitate root expansion.

5. Management points

After transplanting, the soil should be loosened and leveled in time to break up compaction and promote root growth. Combined with watering, apply quick-acting nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer (30 kg per 667 square meters). Depending on the growth of the seedlings, the soil should be cultivated in time to promote the formation of green onions.

6. Pest and disease control

When growing green onions, you need to pay attention to common diseases such as downy mildew, soft rot, purple spot disease, as well as insect pests such as onion thrips and beet leaf moth. Prevention is the main approach in prevention and control, and measures such as reasonable crop rotation, selection of disease-resistant varieties, and enhanced field management can be adopted. When using chemical agents, you should also pay attention to choosing low-toxic, low-residue pesticides , and strictly control the dosage and concentration.

In general, choosing the right time to grow green onions is the key to ensuring their high yield and quality. Growers should arrange planting time reasonably according to local climatic conditions and market demand, and do a good job of subsequent management, so that green onions can be grown successfully.
