How to propagate Ranunculus

How to propagate Ranunculus

Bulb propagation

The cultivation method using its tuberous roots for reproduction is relatively simple, and the flowers bloom early and in larger quantities.

The division of bulbs is generally carried out in autumn. After digging them out of the soil, the bulbous root of the plant along with the rhizome of the plant is broken into several small pieces, leaving a few flower buds and small bulbs in each piece. Disinfect and dry these separated bulbs, then insert them upside down into clean, moist fine sand to stimulate the growth of new shoots. During this period, pay attention to the cool and ventilated environment, and sprinkle water frequently to keep the fine sand moist. Pay attention to disinfection every week to prevent the bulbs from rotting. After half a month, when flower buds and roots appear, you can plant them. When planting, do not bury the seeds too thickly, just bury them to the root level of the stem, otherwise it will affect leaf growth; do not bury them too shallowly, otherwise it will affect rooting. After planting, pay attention to controlling the amount of water. It should not be too dry or too wet. Just keep the soil moist. Wait until the seedlings emerge and then slowly increase the amount of water according to their growth conditions.

Seed propagation

Planting with seeds can produce a large number of flowers in a short period of time, and the flowers grown are more colorful. However, compared with bulb division, the number of flowers is small, the flowering is late, and the development period is longer. If you do not have a high level of technical skills, it is not easy to succeed by direct sowing alone. Generally, the method of propagation is to sow seeds first to cultivate bulbs and then divide them.

Ranunculus is usually sown in autumn, when the average temperature drops below 20℃. The suitable temperature for germination is 10-15℃, and it will germinate in about 20 days. If the seeds are sown in advance when the temperature is above 20℃, the seeds will not start to germinate until the temperature is suitable, and the germination time required will be longer; if the temperature is lower than the suitable temperature before sowing, the seeds will lack sufficient nutrients during the growth period, and the flowers blooming the following year will be smaller. In other words, the longer the nutritional growth period of the seeds before wintering, the higher the quality of the flowers cultivated. Therefore, in order to cultivate high-quality anemones, the practice of extending their vegetative growth period is often adopted, and sowing is carried out in advance in late August. At this time, due to the high temperature, the suitable temperature for germination has not been reached, so artificial induction of flower buds is required. Wrap the seeds with thin cloth, soak them in cold water for 24 hours, then put the soaked seeds in a refrigerator at a temperature of about 8-10℃. Rinse the seeds with cold water every morning and evening to keep the seeds moist. The seeds will germinate in about ten days. After germination, sow them immediately and strengthen management.

Tissue Culture

Tissue culture propagation is to cultivate partial tissues of Anemone and then reproduce it. The advantage of this method is that it is relatively fast, but relatively speaking, the technology is more complicated in operation, and the cost is relatively high. The requirements on factors such as the timing of cultivation are also more stringent. In the actual operation process, it is not very simple, so this method is generally not used in normal breeding.
