How to propagate the chrysanthemum

How to propagate the chrysanthemum

Seed propagation

Time selection: Using this method, we usually choose to sow in March or April.

Seed collection: It generally takes twenty-five to thirty days for this plant to mature from flowering to seed. The seeds we collected were mainly its achenes. When fully ripe, they are dark brown and tend to fall out of the fruit bowl more easily. Once this standard is met, we can collect them in a timely manner.

Sowing and controlling temperature: The method selection is relatively flexible, and it can be scattered sowing or row sowing. After spreading the seeds evenly, we also need to control the temperature. Generally speaking, it is more appropriate to control the temperature above fifteen degrees Celsius. If the temperature can reach 20 to 25 degrees, then sprouts will appear after waiting for about four or five days.

Note: The germination rate of seeds is generally only 20 to 30 percent. If you want to increase the success rate, you can germinate them before formally sowing.

Cutting propagation

Time selection: It is not very strict, spring, summer and autumn are all possible.

Choice of substrate: Sandy loam or yellow loam can be used.

Material selection: If the branches are closer to the base and thicker, the success rate will be very high. If it is a young branch, the success rate will be relatively low, about 20%, so unless there is no other choice, we generally will not use young branches.

Specific steps: Choose cuttings that are ten to twenty centimeters long, remove the leaves on them, and then leave about two or three small buds, and place them directly horizontally on the substrate. Keep the substrate moist and wait about fifteen to twenty-five days for new roots to grow.
