How to prune tea roses

How to prune tea roses

1. Time for pruning

Generally speaking, the best time to prune it is when the plant stops dormancy or is about to sprout, or when it stops growing and is about to dormancy. These time periods are very suitable, and pruning at this time is very beneficial for its better growth in the future.

2. Pruning methods

When pruning, there are three common methods: light pruning, medium pruning and heavy pruning. Light pruning means shortening healthy branches and removing buds that expand inward. Then the moderate pruning is to cut off the strong branches of the first year at its base or cut them in half. The final heavy pruning is to leave only 3 to 4 first-year branches on the whole plant, and choose to cut it short when it is 20 cm from the ground. Which method to choose for pruning depends mainly on your needs.

3. Selection of trimmed objects

When pruning, it does not mean that every scented rose can be pruned. It still depends on the condition of the plant. If it is a newly transplanted plant, if it has been pruned before planting, then it does not need to be pruned again within the first year after planting. After one year, you can cut off some of the thinner and weaker branches that are crossed together at its roots, and then at least half of the strong branches left should be cut off. If the scented rose has been planted for more than 3 years, it still needs to be pruned every year to better maintain its perfect shape.

4. Preparation of tools for pruning

When it comes to pruning tea roses, not just any tool will do. We can prepare a better pair of scissors, and the cutting edge of these scissors must be smooth. Usually, you should also pay attention to applying some lubricating oil to it for maintenance to keep it sharp. For those thicker or higher branches, we can use a pruning saw. It is best not to use a machete because it will damage the bark.
