When to prune hibiscus

Hibiscus is pruned in autumn and winter. You can prune away dead branches, diseased branches, weak branches, overly long branches, and overly dense branches to encourage it to grow more new branches and bloom more in the second year.

How to prune hibiscus

1. Autumn and winter pruning: It usually blooms from July to October. After the hibiscus flowering period ends each year, it can be lightly or heavily pruned. Generally, if it grows well, all its branches can be cut off. If the side branches are too long, about 10 cm can be retained. If it grows poorly, one-third can be cut off.

2. Pruning of dense branches: When the branches and leaves of hibiscus grow densely, it will affect its photosynthesis in the sun. The dense parts need to be properly pruned so that the branches and leaves can get better light. The twisted stems can be properly pruned, leaving 2-3cm.

3. Cluster pruning: Each time the plant is pruned, the branches may appear messy. At this time, the overly long side branches can be cut off, and the flower branches can also be shortened appropriately to make them more ornamental and produce more flowers.

Hibiscus Pruning Tips

According to the law of survival of the fittest, some branches with good growth need to be retained, and some branches with poor growth need to be cut off.

Hibiscus needs to wait until winter or early spring for pruning, pruning the roots and branches, as well as old, diseased and weak branches, to reduce nutrient consumption and allow more nutrients to be supplied to the plant, which can promote the germination of more new buds.

Timely cut off dense branches, overlapping young branches, inner horizontal branches, inner branches, and parallel branches. It is also necessary to prune the top to break the dominance of the top.

Tips for pruning hibiscus

When pruning hibiscus, be careful not to over-prune it. This will affect the normal growth and flowering of the plant. After pruning, it needs to be watered appropriately. At this time, there are still wounds, so it needs to be maintained in a dark, well-ventilated environment and topdressed in time.
