When is eggplant usually planted?

Eggplant , as a common vegetable , is loved by people for its unique taste and rich nutrition. Due to the high market demand, eggplant is also quite commonly grown in China. So when is eggplant generally planted? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is eggplant usually planted?

The planting time of eggplant varies depending on the regional climate, and it is generally suitable for planting in spring and autumn. The specific time is as follows: The planting time in the north is from late March to early April in spring and from late August to early September in autumn. The planting time in the south is from late February to early March in spring and from late August to early September in autumn.

What are the techniques for growing eggplant?

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Before planting, apply 3-5 cubic meters of well-rotted farmyard manure and 40 kg of compound fertilizer per mu in combination with land preparation. It is required that two-thirds of the fertilizer be applied generally, and then after deep plowing and fine harrowing to level the land, the remaining fertilizer should be applied in furrows with a large row spacing of 70 cm and a small row spacing of 50 cm, and then sufficient water should be poured.

2. Seed treatment

Soak the seeds in warm water before sowing. This method is simple, easy, cost-effective and has strong bactericidal effect. The specific method is: first put the seeds into a nylon mesh bag or gauze bag, soak it in room temperature water for 15 minutes, then put it in 55℃-60℃ hot water, soak for 15 minutes, stirring while soaking. Stop stirring when the water temperature drops to 25-30℃, then continue soaking for 8 hours, take out the seeds, clean the mucus on the seeds with clean water, and then wrap them with a wet towel for germination.

3. Sowing method

The soil should be relatively dry when sowing. In order to ensure uniform sowing, you can mix the seeds with dry sand or dry burnt soil. After sowing, cover them with dry sand or dry burnt soil with a thickness of about 0.5 cm. The temperature is low during spring sowing, so use a film arch shed to keep warm after sowing; for autumn sowing, use black mesh to cool down, keep the temperature in the shed at 15-20℃, and keep the soil moist. Check frequently after sowing and remove weeds. When the seedlings grow 2-3 true leaves, move the overcrowded seedlings to areas where the seedlings are sparse or there are no seedlings to ensure that the seedlings grow healthily. Wait until 6-7 true leaves grow before transplanting.

4. Reasonable density planting

The double-row planting method uses a row spacing of 50-60 cm and a plant spacing of 50 cm, with 1000-1200 plants planted per acre. The spacing between plants in a single row is 40 cm, and 800 plants are planted per acre. After transplanting, water the plants sufficiently to ensure that they take root. After a week of acclimatization, you can start applying a small amount of water and fertilizer. At the same time, pay attention to check for damage caused by cutworms and the occurrence of damping-off disease, and replant seedlings in time.

In general, eggplant is generally suitable for sowing in spring and autumn. It is necessary to sow at the right time and do a good job of sowing and seedling raising to cultivate high-quality seedlings. This can reduce the pressure of subsequent field management and lay a solid foundation for high yields.
