As January begins, the temperature in many areas begins to drop sharply. Friends who planted kiwi trees in January should develop a kiwi management plan suitable for their own orchards based on the local climate and environment. Let’s learn about kiwifruit management measures in January. 1. Pruning work Winter pruning of kiwifruit usually starts in mid-to-late December and needs to be completed before the end of January. During the pruning process, the traditional tree shape should be transformed into a tree shape that is more conducive to light, and the frame structure should be standardized and the use of " greenhouse frames " should be promoted. This change will help improve the efficiency of light energy utilization, make full use of the rack space, simplify the pruning process, and achieve high quality, stable yield, good lighting and easy-to-manage tree structure. For one-year-old saplings, pruning should be done to full buds to promote early climbing, rapid growth and the development of strong branches. For two-year-old saplings, two main vines should be selected about 30 cm away from the main trunk of the frame, extended in the opposite direction along the central iron wire, and fruiting mother branches should be cultivated on the main vines. Three-year-old saplings should choose strong fruiting branches or developmental branches, and cut them at full buds to cultivate fruiting mother branches. Adult fruit trees should follow the pruning principle of fewer branches and more buds, make rational use of the shelf space, and reduce the density of branches and vines. Before pruning, saws, shears and other tools need to be disinfected with 75% alcohol. After pruning is completed, all cut and sawed edges need to be coated with cypermethrin ointment, thiophanate-methyl ointment, Frank or sealing oil. 2. Cold protection measures Given the low temperatures, kiwifruit orchards need to continue to take precautions against frost damage. After snowfall, the snow on the racks and branches should be cleared in time to avoid damage to the buds. At the same time, avoid tying the vines too early to avoid affecting next year's budding. The root and rhizome can be covered with soil to protect against cold, and the snow on the root and rhizome of the tree should be cleared in time. For kiwifruit orchards in poorly ventilated areas such as river valleys, river beaches, low-lying areas and along mountainous areas, in addition to whitewashing the tree trunks, the main kiwifruit trunks should also be wrapped to protect against the cold. It is recommended to use materials with good breathability (such as cloth strips, corn stalks, straw, etc.) for wrapping, and avoid using materials with poor breathability such as plastic paper. The wrapping height should exceed 1 meter. 3. Prevention and treatment of ulcer disease After pruning, cankers should be prevented by applying full-tree trunk coatings and spraying. Recommended spray agents include 600 times diluted 3% thiophanate-methyl or 600-800 times diluted copper hydroxide; the agent for applying to the trunk can be 50-60 times diluted sinomenine or 50-100 times diluted copper hydroxide. Continue to monitor the occurrence of canker in kiwifruit orchards and adhere to the principle of "early detection, early treatment". For the spots on the main trunk, scrape them off thoroughly and then apply lime sulfur, Frank, Thiophanate and other agents to the wounds; if spots appear on 1-2 year old branches, the diseased branches should be cut off and taken out of the orchard for burning or deep burial, and the cut ends should be protected with medicine. With the arrival of January, the management of kiwifruit orchards is particularly important. The above are the key measures for kiwifruit orchard management this month. The implementation of these measures will help kiwifruit trees safely survive the winter and lay a solid foundation for next year's harvest.
