How to prune peach trees in winter

1. Why should peach trees be pruned?

In fact, it is not just peach trees, any trees need pruning and care so that they can grow more luxuriantly and give people a beautiful, fresh and handsome feeling from an aesthetic point of view. In addition, peach trees not only bloom but also bear fruit, so regular pruning is not only for aesthetic reasons but also promotes the yield of peach trees. Why not? Therefore, regular pruning is still necessary, and different pruning methods are used for trees of different ages. Next, we will discuss how to prune peach trees of three different ages!

2. Things to note when pruning peach trees

Peach tree pruning in winter mainly starts at the beginning of the next year. The ages of the trees being pruned are different, and the methods used are also different. There are mainly three types of peach tree pruning. They are: young tree stage, first fruit stage, and mature tree stage.

Pruning of young trees: The form is to maintain the dominant position of the central trunk. The main branches that are too thick at the roots need to be cut off, and the remaining branches are retained. The branches of young trees are relatively fragile, so it is better to keep the main branches as much as possible and then cut off all the complicated and redundant branches.

Pruning during the first fruiting period can continue the previous pruning method, focusing on the comprehensive use of measures such as branch pulling, bud cutting, and girdling. After determining the peach tree that needs to be pruned, the height after pruning should preferably be around 60-70 cm. After that, it is necessary to consider various external factors such as the characteristics of the variety, and then select the number of main branches. The amount of this number can be further determined based on the shape of the tree. Depending on the choice of peach tree, the standard number is generally 3.

The pruning of mature peach trees is more complicated, and there are many types of pruning. First, you need to comprehensively observe and analyze the entire tree to find out the main problems that affect the overall structure and the tree body, find out which extra branches need to be cut off, and then adjust the main branches, cut off the more complicated secondary trunks, retain the main trunk, and do not let the complicated secondary trunks press down on the main trunk. Maintain the overall shape and prune the parts.
