The propagation method of Trichosanthes kirilowii

The propagation method of Trichosanthes kirilowii

1. Seed propagation

Collecting seeds: We can pick its fruits from September to October every year. When its skin starts to soften a little, we can take out its seeds, mix the seeds with wood ash, wipe off the pulp, and store them dry over the winter. Or you can hang it with the stems in a ventilated place. Cold bed seedling cultivation is more suitable to start in early spring. You can insert the pointed end of the seed into the soil and spray water frequently to keep the seedbed moist. When waiting for the seeds to germinate, start ventilating them, and then control the temperature to around 22 degrees. After about 10 days, they will begin to emerge from the soil. If you see the leaves sticking out, you can put them in pots or plant them separately.

Sowing: Sowing usually starts in April. Choose some soil that is fertile and has good drainage. Apply enough fertilizer after digging the holes. Cover it with soil and start sowing the seeds. Cover it with 2 cm thick rice mud and they will be unearthed in about half a month.

2. Propagation by root division

If you use this method of propagation, you should choose female plants that have been bearing fruit for 3 to 5 years in the previous year and are relatively strong and not rotten, as well as an appropriate amount of strong male plants. You must also get the proportions right. After marking them, dig out the tubers around the Qingming Festival. Select some fresh tubers with a stem thickness of 3 to 6 cm, white cross-section, and no disease. Then cut them into small pieces of five to six centimeters long. After drying them slightly and the wounds heal, you can start planting. When planting, dig a 9 cm deep hole every 60 cm on the prepared ditch surface. Put a root segment in each hole, cover it with some soil, and tamp it down with your feet. Then cover it with a little soil to form a small mound, and dig it up after half a month, or cover it with a layer of plastic film after planting. When the seedlings grow out, you can break the plastic film and take out the seedlings. This completes the root division method.
