How to sow white thuja

How to sow white thuja

1. Seed collection

We usually start collecting seeds in mid-to-late October, and generally choose strong mother trees that grow fast, bear fruit early and have very good quality. Also, we must pay attention to the fact that they must be free of diseases and insect pests. Otherwise it will affect its future germination, so you must pay attention.

2. Treatment after seed collection

After collecting the seeds, we need to spread them out in the sun to dry. After the peel cracks, we need to collect the seeds and dry them in a cool and dry place. Seeds should not be collected too late. If collected too late, the seed coat will crack and the seeds will fall off, making them difficult to harvest. In early January of the following year, we can soak the seeds in warm water at about 30 degrees for a day and a night, and then take them out to mix with sand.

3. Preparation before planting

When sowing, we usually choose a place with higher terrain, which should be sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, and the drainage should also be relatively good. Therefore, it is best to choose a shady area with loose soil to start digging the hole, with a width of about 1 meter. The depth of the pit should be 60 to 80 cm. Then we spread a layer of coarse sand on the bottom of the pit, and then spread a layer of five to ten centimeters thick moist fine river sand.

4. How to sow seeds

We mix the seeds and wet sand in a certain proportion and pile them in a pit. The humidity of the sand must be suitable so that it can be squeezed into a ball by hand and fall apart when you release your hand. When the sand is 20 cm away from the ground, cover it with a 5 cm thick layer of sand, cover it with soil into the shape of a roof, and then insert a straw bundle in the center of the pit to help it ventilate better. Then dig some drainage holes around the pit to prevent water accumulation. Regular inspections should be carried out during storage to prevent the seeds from heating up and rotting. The soil will begin to thaw in mid-March. Place the seeds in a sunny place sheltered from the wind, add appropriate amount of water and maintain the temperature to make it grow faster.
