How to prune pine bonsai

How to prune pine bonsai

Trimming method:

There are two ways to prune pine bonsai, one is to pick buds and the other is to prune branches, which are also the two most commonly used methods.

Time to prune:

The best time for pruning is from October to February of the following year. This is the dormant period of pine bonsai and it will stop growing, so pruning at this time is the most suitable.

Pruning method:

First, prune off all the branches and leaves that are too messy, too long, and have been eroded by pests and diseases. After pruning, wrap all the cut ends with white tape (medical tape) to protect the trees. Then pick the buds, mainly the buds at the top of the branches, but choose to pick the longer ones, so that the original branches and leaves can be denser and the branches can be thicker and stronger.

However, if it is left unpruned for a long time and allowed to grow freely, it will not only destroy its beauty but also weaken its growth.

Principles of pine bonsai pruning:

When we do pruning, we not only control its growth and remove branches and leaves damaged by pests and diseases, but also shape it better. So before trimming, you should also determine what shape you want it to have after trimming. In fact, the pruning of bonsai also reflects a person's aesthetic taste.

Now is October, a cool and refreshing month. If you have a pine bonsai at home, you might as well start pruning it. Remember to do the normal pruning of the branches first, and then do the beautification pruning.
