Check out the vegetables you can grow in September

Many people mistakenly believe that fall is only for harvesting and not planting, but this is not true. As long as you choose the right varieties and master the relevant techniques in September, the vegetables sown in autumn can safely survive the winter and bring a rich harvest before the following spring, ensuring that your table has fresh vegetables available all year round. So what vegetables can be planted in September?

1. Spinach

In temperate regions, autumn is one of the ideal seasons for growing spinach because the climatic conditions at this time are conducive to the growth of spinach. Spinach seeds can germinate at temperatures between 4°C and 8°C, and the optimum temperature for growth is between 15°C and 20°C. The temperature gradually drops in September, especially the night temperatures are lower and the day temperatures are moderate. Such temperature conditions are conducive to the germination of spinach seeds and the growth of plants.

2. Bok Choy

The climate in September gradually turns cooler, which is suitable for the growth of bok choy. It takes about 45 to 50 days from sowing to harvesting. When planting, choose well-drained soil rich in organic matter and keep the soil moist. Bok choy has a high water requirement, so it needs to be watered regularly during the growing period, especially in the hot summer. At the same time, bok choy also needs proper fertilization, especially during the growth period, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer or organic fertilizer can be applied.

3. Chrysanthemum

Autumn is one of the ideal seasons for sowing chrysanthemum, especially in northern regions where the cool climate is very suitable for the growth of chrysanthemum. In North China, spring open-field cultivation generally occurs from March to April, while autumn sowing occurs from late July to early September. The growing period is longer in autumn, the yield is high and the quality is good.

4. Coriander

Coriander is a vegetable that prefers cool climates and is suitable for planting in spring and autumn. September is a suitable period for planting autumn coriander, especially in the northern regions. You can choose to sow from late August to mid-September, while in the warm southern regions, you can sow from September to October. The outer skin of coriander seeds is relatively hard, so it is usually necessary to rub off the outer skin of the seeds before sowing, and then soak them in clean water for germination to promote faster germination of the seeds.

5. Lettuce

Lettuce prefers a cool environment and is neither cold-resistant nor heat-resistant. It grows quickly and can be harvested about 30 days after sowing. The cool weather in September is very suitable for growing lettuce. This period is a good time to plant lettuce whether in the north or the south. When planting lettuce, you should choose varieties suitable for the local climate, ensure that the soil is moist, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and pay attention to the prevention and treatment of diseases and pests.

In addition, garlic, peas, etc. are also suitable for planting in September, but when planting, you must also arrange the appropriate sowing period according to the different climatic conditions in the north and south.
