How to prune crape myrtle

Pruning methods

Crape myrtle is generally pruned in three stages, namely spring, winter, summer and autumn.

spring

There are two ways of pruning in spring: pre-bud pruning and post-bud pruning. Pre-bud pruning should be done before the crape myrtle grows new branches, so as not to disrupt its growth function. Crape myrtle grows relatively quickly and sprouts quickly. In spring, leaf buds will grow everywhere on the branches, which will destroy the appearance of the plant and make it grow rather messy. At this time, you can use the post-bud pruning method to prune it.

winter

In winter, the crape myrtle will go dormant. Pruning it after the dormant period can maintain its shape. During the pruning process of crape myrtle, the branches should be pruned in a layered manner. This will prevent the seedlings from crossing each other after they grow, and will make the plant look more layered. At the same time, ensure that there are only a few buds on the main trunk.

Summer and Autumn

Pruning in summer and autumn is to prolong the flowering period of the crape myrtle. The recently grown branches are pruned so that only a small number of buds are left on the branches. This will encourage the crape myrtle to grow new branches and ensure its beauty. This method of pruning is called bud pruning.

Precautions

If new shoots grow at the root of the crape myrtle, they can be removed at this time to ensure the beauty of the plant. It needs to be placed in a place with good air circulation and good sunlight for maintenance.
