Island gardenia is a very beautiful flower plant with lush branches and leaves, evergreen leaves all year round, fragrant flowers and high ornamental value. Here are some tips on growing and taking precautions for island gardenia. 1. Soil Island gardenia likes to grow in acidic soil with rich humus. It can be prepared in the proportion of 4 parts of leaf mold, 4 parts of garden soil, 1 part of decomposed soybean meal and 1 part of river sand. You can also add 0.5% of black alum or sulfur to mix and use. 2. Lighting Island gardenia likes sunshine, but cannot withstand scorching sun, so the environment with scattered light under the shade of trees is most suitable for gardenia growth. It’s relatively dry in winter, so we need to get some sun and keep moisturized at the same time. Avoid strong sunlight at noon in summer, otherwise the leaves will turn yellow. 3. Temperature The growth temperature of island gardenia is 20-25℃, and the suitable temperature for flowering is 26-28℃. In winter, the indoor temperature should be maintained at 6-10℃, and the minimum temperature should not be lower than 0℃. If the room temperature is above 15℃, the south-facing doors and windows should be opened for proper ventilation. 4. Moisture Island gardenias generally need more water in summer. In the hot summer weather, the water evaporates quickly, so it is only necessary to water them once every three days, in the evening. Or you can use the immersion pot method. In autumn, you only need to water once every two days. In winter, you should follow the principle of not watering unless the soil is dry. Because the temperature is low in winter, water evaporates very slowly. Watering too frequently can easily lead to root rot. 5. Fertilization In spring, gardenias need a lot of fertilizer during their growth period. They need to be applied with decomposed human manure or cake fertilizer every month or so. Watering should be stopped one day before fertilization, and water should be poured thoroughly on the day of fertilization. Timely watering should prevent the soil from becoming compacted. If watering is not done in time after fertilization, the soil will become compacted. If the soil is compacted, the roots of the plants will not be able to circulate, and the growth of the flowers will be affected. 6. Pruning Island Gardenia is a woody plant. To maintain a good plant shape, it must be pruned in time, once in May to July in spring and again in December in winter. These two time periods cause the least damage to Gardenia. It is best to trim the opposite leaves at the end of the branches and remove the dead flowers to prevent more flowers from blooming next year. 7. Notes The plant of island gardenia is not large, but in order to prevent the soil from becoming alkaline, the pot needs to be changed every 1 to 2 years. That’s it |
