Rose

For grafting roses, Huahua has chosen the bark grafting method for you. Grafting roses onto osmanthus fragrans is a very simple and effective grafting method.

1. First, prepare a plant of Aromatica obovata as the rootstock. Be sure to choose a healthy plant as the rootstock, otherwise it will easily fail.

2. Then prepare the rose scion. Don’t use old branches, but small branches that have just grown this year. And there should be thin leaf buds on the branches, no thick flower buds. Then bevel the bottom end of the scion to form a smooth, sharp section.

3. Align the cross-section of the scion with the rootstock, and then cut a notch on the bark of the rootstock that is the same size as the scion. Then fit the cross section of the scion tightly into the notch of the rootstock bark. This step is very important. The cambium must be aligned so that it can survive.

Some flower lovers may not understand what the cambium is. If you look at the logo in the picture below, it should be easy to understand.

4. Repeat the above steps to insert the other two scion grafts. In fact, you can also put in a scion, but the more you put in, the more chances it may have to survive. And if you put in a few more scion, when they survive in the future, they will look more uniform and dense.

5. Tie the grafting tape. If you don't have grafting tape, you can also wrap it with plastic wrap and tape. However, the disadvantage of plastic wrap is that you have to peel it off after it heals, which may damage the small buds that sprout. But the grafting tape will weather away on its own, so it’s less of a hassle. Everyone please choose according to your own situation!

6. In areas with dry weather, use plastic bags to keep the plants moist. In humid areas, do not use bags, otherwise the plants will suffocate. One last point, that is, don’t keep it in the sun, you need shade indoors.

If it is planted in the ground, you can tie a big leaf as a parasol as shown below. Because the sun is very strong in summer, it is not conducive to the healing of the incision!

Kalanchoe

The grafting of Kalanchoe is generally done by cleft grafting.

1. Prepare the cuttings first. Cut a branch from a Kalanchoe of another color, then sharpen both sides into a wedge shape like the one shown below.

2. Prepare the rootstock. The width of the rootstock should be larger than the width of the scion, so that the scion can be wrapped later, which is conducive to healing. Use scissors to cut off an original branch, and remember to flatten the cross section.

3. Make a vertical cut in the middle of the rootstock, about 1.5 cm deep.

4. Quickly insert the cut cuttings into the cut on the rootstock. Remember, the cambium must be aligned!

5. Tie tightly from bottom to top with plastic film.

6. Finally, cover it with a small plastic bag to keep it moist. The temperature is high now, so there is no need to seal the bottom of the small bag. Try not to let moisture get on the wound, otherwise it will rot!

7. Move the flower pot to a semi-shaded place and you can remove the bag after about 10 days. After a few days, when the grafted branches sprout and grow gradually, you can remove the grafting tape. Soon, the grafted multi-colored Kalanchoe flowers are in full bloom!

Osmanthus fragrans

It is mid-July now. In a week or two, it will be the perfect time to graft osmanthus buds! As for osmanthus grafting, Huahua recommends tassel as the rootstock. Before the beginning of autumn, the tassels are growing vigorously. At this time, if you graft the buds with osmanthus, they will sprout very quickly!

1. First prepare the rootstock and cut off the branches at the top of the tassel, making sure the cross section is flat.

2. Take a small branch with buds, pinch off the leaves on it, and leave a little petiole.

3. Cut a small incision on the edge of the rootstock, making it the same size as the cutting, so that it can fit better and grow better later.

4. Then cut off the skin on one side of the cutting and insert it into the groove of the rootstock.

5. Tie tightly with a plastic bag. Finally, wrap it with plastic wrap to keep it moist. Within 10 days, the small buds will sprout!
