Summer pruning methods for apricot trees

Topping

When the base of the apricot tree branches has become semi-lignified, it is the appropriate time to pinch the branches. The time for pinching is from the time when new branches grow out to the end of May. Generally, strong branches are left about 20 centimeters to promote branching, increase the amount of branches and leaves, and lay the foundation for cultivating fruiting branches. For weak branches, leave about 30 cm to promote the formation of full flower buds. There is no need to pinch the tops of the plants that were planted in the same year, because the growth is slow at this time and pinching is not conducive to root development. For branches that grow vigorously, pinching can be done twice or three times.

Pull branches

Branch pulling is to artificially increase the angle between new shoots and branches. It is mostly used on young trees and trees in the early fruiting stage, and is suitable to be carried out from early to mid-May to early to mid-June. By changing the angle and direction of the apricot tree branches through the opening angle, the apical dominance can be controlled, the light and ventilation conditions can be improved, and it is conducive to the cultivation of a large number of fruiting branches.

Bend Branch

Branch bending is usually done in July and August, allowing new branches to grow downward, left or right under the action of external force. They can also be tied to their own branches or the branches of other trees to change their growth direction. The benefits of bending branches include inhibiting branch growth, promoting the germination of short branches and the formation of flower buds, etc.

Thinning

Thinning is mainly carried out in the first few years after the apricot tree is planted. It is best to do this from the end of June to the beginning of July, because the branches are soft at this time, easier to break, and the wounds are easy to heal. Apricot trees that have been thinned need to be checked regularly and newly formed branches should be removed in a timely manner according to the situation.
