How to propagate white azalea

How to propagate white azalea

Cuttings of white rhododendron

Cuttings from old branches

Use dormant old branches of white azalea for cuttings, which should be done before sprouting and leaves appear in spring. Select strong old branches and cut them at the nodes, with 2-3 internodes, and the length of the cuttings is about 15 cm. Insert the cuttings two-thirds into the seedbed, water them thoroughly after insertion, and they will take root in half a month.

Softwood cuttings

For softwood cuttings, usually choose plants that are growing vigorously in late spring or early autumn. Choose vigorous semi-lignified branches grown in the current year, retain the front 2-3 internodes, remove the leaves from the lowest internode, make an oblique cut at the bottom about 0.5 cm, and then insert the cuttings into the seedbed at two-thirds of the way. Generally, it will take about 10 days to take root.

White azalea layering

White azalea can be propagated by high-altitude layering, which is usually carried out in early spring and late autumn. The branches and vines that are pressed into the soil need to be cut to promote rooting. Keep the soil moist during layering and place it in an area with scattered light. After it takes root, it can be separated from the mother plant to form a new plant.

White azalea sowing

The seed collection time can be chosen in September, and the sowing time can be chosen in March of the following year. Choose breathable and fertile soil. Cover with plastic wrap after sowing to maintain humidity and temperature. Place it in an area with scattered light. It will germinate and emerge from the soil in about 20 days. Remove the plastic wrap after emergence. When the seedlings grow to about 5 cm, thin them out to enhance their vitality and prevent them from exposure to the sun. It can be transplanted into a new pot before sprouting and leaves appear the following year. Be careful to transplant it with soil to prevent root damage.
