How to prune cedar

The pruning methods of cedar generally include short cutting, thinning, cutting back, and letting it grow longer. However, the most commonly used method of pruning and shaping cedar trees at home is short pruning. Below we will focus on short pruning.

The purpose of cedar pruning

The purpose of cedar pruning and shaping is to better control the number of other branches of the cedar, the length of the cedar branches, and the size of the cedar crown to make it more beautiful.

Specific steps for pruning cedar

Mild truncation

Mild pruning is the least harmful to cedar among the three specific pruning methods. It only requires cutting off about 1/3 of the length of the cedar branches. Mild pruning is more conducive to the growth trend of the branches and has less overall impact on the branches.

Moderately short

Moderate pruning is to cut off about half of the length of the cedar branches. Moderate pruning can help the further development of the branches and is beneficial to the growth of branches in the middle and lower parts.

Severe truncation

Severe pruning has a huge impact on cedar. If not handled properly, it may even cause the death of the cedar. Therefore, flower lovers must be cautious when choosing severe pruning. Heavy pruning refers to cutting off about 2/3 of the length of cedar branches. As the name suggests, heavy pruning has a strong stimulating effect on the plant, so try not to choose heavy pruning unless it is absolutely necessary.
