Cultivation methods and precautions of Golden Edge Agave

Cultivation methods and precautions of Golden Edge Agave

Water and fertilizer requirements

A mixture of leaf mold and coarse sand is often used for potted plants, and fertilizer is applied once a month during the growing season.

Increase watering in summer to keep the leaves green and tender, and provide some shade when the sun is strong. After autumn, the growth of agave is slow, so watering should be controlled, the plant should be kept dry, fertilization should be stopped, and the soil should be properly cultivated. If it is potted for viewing, it is necessary to remove the side suckers in time to keep the plant beautiful.

Temperature requirements

It is relatively resistant to drought and barrenness, but afraid of waterlogging. It is relatively resistant to cold, and the suitable temperature for growth is 22-30℃.

Except for tropical and subtropical areas, potted plants in other areas should be placed in a low-temperature greenhouse for protection during the winter, and moved outdoors after the Qingming Festival next year. They should be properly shaded in the summer.

Lighting requirements

For agaves with white or yellow edges, provide some shade when the sun is strong. Otherwise, if it is overexposed to the sun, the golden edges will slowly disappear and lose their ornamental value.

Reproduction method

Division: It should be carried out in early spring in April when repotting. The mother plant should be lifted out and the sucker buds next to the mother plant should be peeled off and planted separately.

Sowing: It can only bear fruit through cross-pollination. After collecting seeds, sow them in April-May. They will germinate after about 2 weeks. The seedlings grow slowly, and grow rapidly after they become mature. Only old plants over 10 years old can bloom and bear fruit.

Pruning methods

As new leaves grow, the lower leaves will slowly wither. This is normal metabolism. The old yellow and withered leaves at the bottom should be removed in time. If you find a large amount of fallen leaves on the ground, clean them up in time to avoid the breeding of bacteria.

To maintain the beauty of home potted plants, side buds should be cut off in time to avoid cluttered branches and leaves and messy plant shape.
