Four methods of propagating summer sweet

The sowing propagation method of summer plum

The mature seeds of summer sweet can be picked in mid-to-late October. Maturity is manifested by the pitcher-shaped fruit sac being yellow-brown, while the achenes are purple-brown. Take out the seeds for storage, and do not let them become too dry. Before sowing in early spring, soak it in cold water for about 1 day to allow the seed coat to absorb water and swell, allowing it to germinate early. When sowing, cover with grass to keep moisture, and it will usually emerge from the soil in about 15 days. After about two months when all the seedlings have emerged, remove the covering grass and build a shed to provide shade to prevent the seedlings from being burned by the scorching sun. Generally, the seedlings grown in the same year can be transplanted and planted after one year. The seedlings will generally bud and bloom in 4-5 years.

The propagation method of summer plum by division

The root suckers of summer sweet can be used for division propagation. Division propagation is suitable for the period from autumn leaf fall to spring budding. When dividing the plant, dig out the plant with a shovel and gently shake off the soil on the roots. Use a sharp knife to divide the suckers into several small plants. Each small plant needs to have 1-2 main branches. Then cut it 10 cm from the main trunk and finally plant it.

Grafting propagation of summer plum

It is usually carried out in June and July. Cut semi-lignified branches and remove leaves. The spike length is about 15 cm. The lower incision is 0.2 cm below the node. The substrate can be a half-mixture of sand and vermiculite. Use full light and an intermittent spray device to achieve a higher survival rate. It usually blooms in 2 years.

Layering propagation of summer plum

Between February and March, choose healthy, disease- and insect-free one-year-old or two-year-old branches, and use a knife to cut the part where they enter the soil, or use ring peeling. It is best to apply rooting powder solution on the wound to promote wound healing. Next, bury it in the dug trench, cover it with acidic wet soil and keep it moist on a daily basis. Generally, after about 2-3 months, the scored or ring-peeled areas will take root. Before sprouting in the spring of the second year, cut it off from the mother plant and plant it separately or in a pot.
