Preparation of osmanthus seeds before sowing

Seed Inspection

Seed inspection is to remove empty shells and spoiled seeds. You can use a knife to randomly cut open some plump seeds to observe whether the kernels are fresh and alive. Generally, the kernel of good seeds is milky white.

Seed disinfection

After washing the seeds with clean water, soak them in 1% bleaching powder or 0.5% potassium permanganate solution for disinfection for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse them with clean water and dry the seeds, or soak them in 0.5% formalin solution for about a quarter of an hour, pour out the solution and seal the seeds for about 30 minutes, finally rinse them with clean water and dry them.

Germination of Osmanthus fragrans seeds

To encourage the seeds to germinate quickly, soak the sterilized seeds in warm water at about 50°C for about 4 hours. After taking out the seeds, put them in a basket, cover them with straw or wet cloth, and place them at 18-24°C to germinate. When more than half of the seed shells have cracked or the radicle is slightly exposed, they can be sown. During the germination process, the seeds need to be turned over frequently to keep the temperature and humidity of the upper and lower layers consistent so that the germination can be uniform.

How to sow osmanthus

Sowing is generally carried out in August-September of the current year or April-May of the following year. The substrate should be loose, well-drained and breathable, such as fine sand humus, fertilizer-free leaf mold, vermiculite, perlite, etc. Soak the osmanthus seeds in warm water for 24 hours, then take them out and sow them in the potting soil using the spot sowing method. After sowing, cover them with a layer of 2-3 cm of fine sand. Spray it thoroughly with water and then cover it with glass or straw. Remove it after the seeds germinate to allow air to pass through, but also prevent direct sunlight.
