Ginkgo pruning method

Depending on the operating season, ginkgo pruning is generally divided into two types: winter pruning and summer pruning.

Winter is the main period for ginkgo pruning, which is important for cultivating high-yielding tree shapes and increasing yields in the second year. Winter pruning is best done in early winter or early spring. Pruning should not be done in severe cold seasons, otherwise the wounds will be difficult to heal and frost damage and physiological drought will easily occur. Maintenance and pruning should be carried out once a year to cut off competing branches, overgrown branches, dead branches, drooping and aging branches, etc., to make the branches have more short branches and to retract the top branches, etc. The amount of summer pruning is not large, and it can be combined with bud removal, pinching, ring cutting, and ring stripping.

For ginkgo trees propagated by seeds, male plants are shaped using the central leading trunk method, and skeleton branches with larger opening angles are selected as much as possible to make the tree look more majestic. The shaping of female plants uses a central or multi-leader trunk method, but the opening angle of the skeleton branches cannot be too large, so as to avoid being overwhelmed when they grow up. Every year, while selecting new auxiliary branches, cut off the lowest layer of auxiliary branches. At the same time, consider some appropriate arrangement for different tree shapes. Thinning is mainly for miscellaneous branches, and medium and short pruning is generally used to change the branching angle. Pay attention to retaining appropriate cut buds.

When shaping and pruning grafted ginkgo, the leaderless trunk shaping method is adopted. The main thing is to prevent the main branches from extending outward without limit, so as to avoid the load on the main branches increasing as the tree grows, causing the grafted part to be overloaded. Therefore, more medium and short pruning should be used, and the cut buds that can fill the gaps in the crown should be selected. When there are too many branches, appropriate thinning should be carried out.
