How to propagate Aquilegia

Seed propagation of Aquilegia columbine

The seeds should be sown sparsely, and the seed pots need to be covered with glass before the seeds germinate to keep the soil moist and provide shade. Seedlings emerge in 1 month. Seedlings bloom in the second year. High-quality varieties are generally propagated by division, which is carried out in March to April or August to September, but autumn is better. The seedlings can be planted when they are about 10 cm tall, with a spacing of 30 to 40 cm between rows and plants. Top dressing should be applied once before flowering. Shade is required in summer. In cold areas, light covering is needed in winter. The plants tend to decline after 3 years and should be divided in time to promote their renewal.

Propagation of Aquilegia by Division

Fertilization and land preparation are the same as above. Plant in spring or autumn, from January to April in spring and from August to December in autumn, with a spacing of 10×13.2cm between rows and plants, cover with 1.6cm of soil, water sufficiently, and keep the soil moist during the growing period. During the period of vigorous growth, apply a small amount of urea, 5 kg per mu, and irrigate the plants after adding water to promote their growth. Seed propagation: Seeds can be sown from January to April in spring and from June to December in autumn.

Precautions for propagation of Aquilegia

Sow in spring and autumn, and the seedlings will bloom in about 2 years. Planted seedlings need to be renewed every 3 to 4 years. It is cold-resistant, has strong growth potential, and prefers moist and well-drained sandy loam. It likes a semi-shady growing environment. Division is best done in early spring before germination or after leaf fall. It is best to sow the seeds in pots immediately after they mature.
