4 simple and easy methods of cuttings. Once you learn them, you never need to buy flowers again!

Stem cuttings

There are many side buds on the stems of the plant. These young buds can grow new branches. Take stems with 2 to 3 branches and leaves as cuttings. Most herbaceous and woody plants are suitable.

Best time for cuttings: Autumn

Selection of cuttings: Select strong branches of the current year, that is, branches that sprout after flowering in spring and mature in autumn.

Cuttings standards:

Select the current year's woody branches that are 15 to 20 cm long and have three to five nodes. If there are swollen flower buds on the branches, they must be removed and the leaves on the lower part of the branches should be removed.

Cutting medium:

The cutting medium must be well-drained, and can be 80% perlite and 20% coarse sand.

Management after cutting:

Cover the flower pot with a transparent plastic bag, secure it, poke a small hole in the plastic film, and pour water on it to help retain moisture. Place the flowerpot after cuttings in a place with scattered light and keep the soil moist.

After about one or two months, it will take root and sprout.

Leaf cuttings

Fallen leaves not only return to their roots, but also have the ability to take root. The leaves that can usually be used as cuttings are those of plants with relatively thick leaves, such as African violets, gloxinia, peperomia, and succulent plants.

Plant leaf cuttings - Taking Gloxinia as an example

1. Pick off the leaves of Gloxinia with their petioles, suspend the petioles in water, and it will take about three or four weeks for them to take root in winter and about a week in summer.

2. Bury the rooted petioles in soil or sphagnum moss.

3. It is easy for leaf cuttings to take root, but sprouting is a long process. It takes two or three months before you can see seedlings. The time required is relatively shorter in summer.

Bud cuttings

Mainly for herbaceous plants, the survival rate of cuttings with terminal buds is high, and the time to form seedlings is also short. For example, coleus, African impatiens, sunflower, begonia, etc. can all be propagated by this method.

Bud cuttings - taking mint as an example

1. Select strong mint branches with terminal buds, preferably those with dense internodes. The best cuttings are nine to fifteen centimeters.

Remove the bottom leaves.

2. The cuttings can be directly inserted into the water and then potted after they grow roots, or they can be directly inserted into a flowerpot with a substrate.

3. Mint grows relatively fast and can produce many roots in about one to two weeks. After the cuttings take root, you can apply a thin, slow-release fertilizer to facilitate initial growth.

Root cuttings

The roots of some plants also have the ability to grow adventitious buds, so the roots also have the potential for asexual reproduction. Plants like Clerodendrum thomsoniae, Snowdrops in June, and Fireworks Tree.

Root cuttings - Taking Clerodendrum truncatum as an example

Cut the strong root end of the mother plant, cut an oblique end at the bottom and a bottle-shaped end at the top to make it easier to distinguish between the top and the bottom. After that, insert the roots into the substrate, water it thoroughly, and place it in a place with scattered light.

Generally speaking, the roots will be able to produce seedlings in about two to five weeks. After germination, ensure sufficient light.
